Dr Lizzie (Elizabeth) Simon is a Lecturer in Politics in the Department for Social and Political Sciences, Philosophy and Athropology.
Lizzie's areas of expertise include electoral politics, voting behaviour and public opinion. Her key research interests are: political socialisation, attitudes and identity formation, aging, generations and life course trajectories (and how these link to political behaviour), the educational divide in politics, political geography and why 'place' matters in politics, and quantitative methods and causal inference techniques. While much of her research focusses on the British context, she has also undertaken some comparative work.
Her research has been cited in popular media outlets including the Financial Times, The Guardian, and the Times Higher Education Supplement.
Prior to joining the University of Exeter, Lizzie ran the Mile End Institute's Polling London Project - where she developed considerable expertise in the politics of London, and the opinions and policy preferences of those living in the capital. She engaged with the media widely in this role (giving interviews, writing op-eds) and worked with local organisations, using data to identify how policies that would improve the everyday lives of Londoners could be implemeted. She continues to be interested in the politics of the capital, and why they differ from those seen elsewhere in the country - and addresses this question through her broader research agenda on the politics of place.
