Office hours
I am not resident in the Exeter area, so in person every 2-3 weeks in term time, but, otherwise, flexible on line.
Practice Professor Frances Tammer
Professor
International Relations
I joined the University in November 2022, having previously worked as a senior civil servant and leader in the Ministry of Defence and the Cabinet Office. I bring to the University my global strategic, policy, intelligence and operational experience, derived from working across Government and with NATO, the EU, the UN and multiple international partners and coalitions. In the UK I have serviced Prime Ministers, Ministers, the Chiefs of Defence and the National Security Council and Parliament. On the international stage, I have worked with Ambassadors, Ministers, International Coalition Heads, Senior Military personnel and senior Civil Servants.
I am passing on my knowledge honed from working on many of the seminal global events and trends that have shaped the world order over the past four decades, how the Whitehall and international machinery works and the skills and tools required for analysis, decision making and leadership in the private and public sectors in an increasingly fast paced, changing world.
More formally, this is being accomplished through my Advisory role in the Defence, Security and Resilience Network; raising awareness of the University offer within the defence and security arenas; revamping the Strategy and Strategy Institute, career talks about the UK defence and security sectors and a range of focused lectures and masterclasses. In addition, I am now the PI for a Serious Organised Crime project, with the University of Birmingham, for the FCDO. I am also supporting the new AUKUS MBA in Defence and Space.
Above all, I want to stimulate intellectual curiosity, develop challenge abilities and help develop employability skills. As a long-term Champion of Gender, Diversity and Inclusion, I have helped to reduce barriers and promote better opportunities for all whilst in Government and now bringing this best practice into the University through participation in the University Gender Equality Group and as the Champion for WISENet. In addition, I have been part of the Elevate mentoring scheme, (designed to advance ethnic minorities), and mentoring junior staff at the University.
