Gemma Anderson-Tempini is an artist-researcher whose practice centres on drawing as a way of knowing and of finding the limits of knowledge, where uncertainty opens new directions of inquiry. Her practice has developed through sustained collaboration with biologists, philosophers and mathematicians to investigate processes of life. She holds a practice-based PhD from the University of the Arts London and is a Daphne Jackson Research Fellow at the University of Exeter (2026-2029), her project “Breastfeeding as Living Process in Art, Biology and Experience” builds on her previous AHRC-funded research “Representing Biology as Process” (2017-2022) with John Dupré and James Wakefield. She has exhibited internationally at the V&A Museum, Wellcome Collection, ZKM Karlsruhe and Kröller-Müller Museum, and held multiple international residencies at the Centre Culturel Irlandais, Paris and Inter-cross Creative Center, Japan. She has published several artist books and two academic books with Intellect Press: Drawing as a Way of Knowing in Art and Science (2017) and Drawing Processes of Life (2023), and has written a non-academic book on the phenomenological experience of mothering twins, currently seeking publication. Recent commissions include ‘And She Built a Crooked House’ (Artangel, 2023), ‘Living Labyrinths: Art and Fungi’ (RAMM Exeter, 2026), and two site-specific installations for the Isles of Scilly Museum (2026 and 2027).
