I am Associate Professor in the Social Studies of Data and Artificial Intelligence, in the Department of Social and Political Sciences, Sociology, Philosophy and Anthropology.
I am the Exeter lead, and the Ethics & Responsible Innovation lead, for CHAI Hub, the Causality in Healthcare AI Hub funded by the EPSRC, led by the University of Edinburgh, and including the University of Manchester, ICL, UCL, and KCL.
I am a research strand coordinator (Knowledge, Data & AI) in Egenis, the Exeter Centre for the study of life sciences. I am also the lead of Data Governance, Ethics & Openness at Exeter's Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (IDSAI); and a co-lead of the Exeter Health Analytics Research Network.
I am also the Exeter lead of the Sociotechnical Futures and Digital Methods track at the South West Doctoral Training Partnership (ESRC SWDTP). SWDTP is the main vehicle for PhD student funding in our department.
I was a Turing Fellow at the Alan Turing Institute in London for the entirety of Exeter's presence, 2018-2024. I still serve on its TREx research ethics. I am also vice-chair of the Information Governance Review Panel at SAIL, a world-leading public health and administrative data bank and trusted research environment.
