About me

I am a PhD Student in Sociology, funded by the SSIS Global Excellence Studentship for Postgraduate Research.

Before joining the University of Exeter I have worked as a freelance musician and music educator in different settings. This work has provided me with extensive experience in music performance and music education. I also have experience working in community music projects, as well as teaching the undergraduate degree of classical and jazz music, as part of the music faculty at UNICACH in Chiapas, Mexico.

I have a strong interest in working with young people, and an important part of this work has taken place in detention centres for youth in Mexico.

Research Project:

My research is a qualitative study of the multiple ways that young people use and appropriate narcocorridos music in public spaces in Mexico.

For this research, I have used a multi-method approach, including interviews, ethnographic observations, and my adaptation of productive methods such as songwriting workshops. This method is a key component of my project, and it is designed to elicit some forms of tacit knowledge, emotion, and implicit (discursive and visual) narratives. This method also provides participants with opportunities to engage in meaningful musical experiences.
