Social and Political Sciences, Philosophy, and Anthropology

Tom Roberts is a philosopher of mind with expertise in situated and embodied cognition, emotion, and the senses. As part of Exeter Philosophy's Cognition and Culture strand, his research aims to understand how a conscious agent's mental life unfolds within the material, social, and cultural niche they inhabit - that is, how thoughts and experiences are shaped not only by the inner workings of the brain, but through active, skilful, and dynamic engagement with the surrounding environment.

Tom has published widely on philosophical topics including extended mind theory; externalist approaches to mental health and illness; loneliness and experiences of emotional absence; and auditory, olfactory, and haptic sensory modalities.
